Enews February 2016

** The Year of Change
The 2016 year presents opportunities for LRP and you! We have open spots on our board…and we are looking for creative minds for this years Alternative Prom committee. Read on….
Letter from the Interim Executive Director

You haven’t heard from us in awhile because 2015 was a pivotal year for LRP. We underwent changes in leadership and were awarded a $90,000 capacity building grant from the MRG Foundation to increase our effectiveness as the largest queer service and activist nonprofit in Southern Oregon. We predict a “new and upgraded version” of LRP!

In fall 2015, the board appointed me as the Interim Director. I was part of the youth-adult team who founded LRP and the Executive Director from 2008-2012. I also have been the main grant writer for LRP over the years. Some of you may remember me from the Queer Resource Center at SOU where I was the first Director, moving here from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Our new Interim board is comprised of many faces from the past including Mario Fregoso, previous youth member and board president in 2010, who is now the board president. Matthew Reynolds, director
and teacher at Crater Renaissance Academy, has also returned while Rich Rohde, a 5- year board member and community activist, is our veteran board member.

Newer members include Gabriel Blue, co-founder and previous youth member, who brings many years of queer activism to the board, and Sharon Bolles, L.C.S.W, our Board Treasurer. Sharon brings extensive counseling and nonprofit experience and is helping us update our organization and support groups. (Our Not Straight Not Sure youth group is changing their name to a more inclusive one very soon.)

LRP continues to become a more diverse and intergenerational organization. We are starting our Transgender (binary & gender non-conforming) Initiative for all ages. The Initiative will hold a Community Gathering for those who identify as Trans to address needs of this community. Other goals of that project include restarting the Trans support group in Medford, personal advocacy, and resource building on our website.

A much-needed goal of reaching queer people of color and queer people of all ages will be discussed at our annual community meeting and again at our strategic planning meeting during the summer. We also will discuss the idea of LRP, once again, having
a space for meetings and activities to further our goal of creating Queer community in Southern Oregon.

LRP is an organization that builds its power from the ground up, so if you want to serve on the board, do your capstone/internship, or give feedback, please contact us!

We can be reached at our newly updated website  , our FB page Click Here  or on the good ole’ phone,

Here’s to a new year of Queer Power and Services in Southern Oregon!
