SOGSASN

We are very excited to welcome three NEW schools to our Gay-Straight Alliance support program: McLoughlin Middle School, Rogue River Middle School, and Butte Falls High School.

GSAs are integral to the development of queer and ally safe spaces and healthy educational climates. LRP’s program holds two networking and training sessions annually and supports the GSA leaders in social justice activities on their campuses and in their communities. Examples of such events include Day of Silence and Southern Oregon Pride parade.

We held our second GSA leaders training on April 23rd, 2016. Students and a GSA advisor worked with our volunteer facilitators to learn the fundamentals of a GSA, explore new terminology, and learn how to hold a social justice campaign on their campuses. We would like to thank our experienced volunteer guest speakers, Ahsante Sankofa Foree, SOU student organizer, and Sarah Westover, Rogue Climate board member.

Youth Empowerment Theatre

Youth Empowerment Theatre and Planned Parenthood’s REVolution youth group performed together during April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.  They performed at the Ashland Art Center for the First Friday Art Walk reading poems in support of victims and survivors of sexual assault.  They also performed at Lotus Rising Project’s Community Forum, “Unblurring the Lines: A Conversation about Gender Violence in Schools.”  They presented using interactive theater about issues surrounding sexual assault and gender violence in our schools. Also covered were micro-aggressions that often escalate into violence.

Student, grades 9-12 are invited to become a member of our interactive theater education team. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, May 24th, 6:30-8:00 PM, at the Medford Library in the Large Conference Room.  All are welcome!

If you have questions, contact our Youth Empowerment Theatre Coordinator, Kyndra Laughery at [email protected]

Transgender Initiative

LRP’s 3rd Step in the Transgender Initiative:
Research, Community Forum & Group Information:
The Oregon Health and Science University’s nursing program is currently working with LRP by interviewing local providers about their knowledge of and compassion for people who identify as transgender.

Their goal is to produce a list of health care providers who are culturally competent to be added to LRP’s website. They have created an anonymous survey that asks six short questions about the healthcare experience of Trans people.  If you identify as trans and want to contribute to this project, please follow this link to complete the survey by May 17th:

Results of their project will be shared and a panel of providers will speak at LRP’s Community Forum:

End Profiling Campaign

Lotus Rising Project joined other community organizations, in April, when meeting with Ashland Police Chief O’Meara, to connect and clarify how the Ashland Police department is responding to legislation HB 2002.
What identities are protected under HB 2002?
The End Profiling Act states that people cannot be targeted by law enforcement based on their age, race, ethnicity, color, national origin, language, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, political affiliation, religious affiliation, houselessness, or perceived mental or physical disability.  Per Mario Fregoso, LRP’s representative, “It was a great meeting with a positive discussion.”For more information on The End Profiling Act, Click Here
